the mexican government using our court system to fight arizona's sb1070 immigration law. it wants a u.s. circuit court of appeals to block part the of the law that makes it illegal to protect illegal immigrants. mexicans say it's anti-immigration and antimexico. jamie weinstein says it's anti-illegal immigration. you listen to this and -- break it down. so mexico wants the arizona courts to say it's illegal to ban harboring illegal mexicans. do i have that right? >> actually, the -- in arizona court, a lower court put this law on hold. it's before the u.s. court much appeals in san francisco where the mexican government filed an amicus brief saying the law, it's illegal to harbor illegal immigrants but only if you're committing a crime or in the process of committing a crime in addition to that. that's the only people in violation. if you're already committing a crime or having committed a crime and harboring illegal immigrants. the brief says the law, one, harms diplomatic relation with g united states and prevents the mexican government from negotiating with the united states becaus

into law. fox 5's melanie alwick is live on capitol hill this morning with a closer look at the deal. melany. >>reporter: wisdom, you know, it was definitely a nailbiter all day here on capitol hill, despite the bipartisan approval in the senate early on new year's day, passage in the house was definitely not certain, and as the evening wore on, hill watchers were starting to get a little nervous. it was literally the 11th hour, 11:00 last night when house speaker john boehner finally put the senate version up for a vote. it passed 257-167 with mostly democratic support. for much of the day house republicans argued over whether to change the bill by tacking on spending cuts and send it back to the senate. senate leaders warned that would blow apart the entire deal. now, the bill means that taxes will only go up on americans making $400,000, couples making $450,000 and that's fewer people than president obama initially wanted. it also extends long-term unemployment benefits, fixes the alternative minimum tax and prevents a spike in dairy prices. it delays the $109 billion in automati

in a couple of days, the losses of every american's paycheck will get a lot smaller. -- the law assays that every american's paycheck will get a little smaller. but congress can prevent it from happening, if they act now. we may be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time. but if an agreement is not reached on time, then i will urge the senate to hold an upward bound to vote on a basic package that protects the middle class from an income tax hike, extends vital unemployment insurance for americans looking for a job, and lays the groundwork for future progress. such a proposal could pass both houses with bipartisan majorities, as long as these leaders allow to come to a vote. if they still want to vote no, that is their prerogative. but they should let everybody else vote as well. that is the way this is supposed to work. we cannot afford a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy. the economy is growing. the folks you sent to washington have to do their jobs. the housing market is healing, but that could stall if folks are seeing smaller paychecks. unemploym
